I. Introduction to Computers (Hardware)

Students should know the basic concepts associated with computers and their use. Students should know why computers and application software are studied, what a computer is, what a computer does, and how a computer knows what to do. The components of a computer, including input devices, the central processing unit, memory, output devices, and auxiliary storage. Students should know how system software is different from application software and be acquainted with the purpose of some application software packages and also Networks, the Internet, and the World Wide Web.

l       Define the term computer and discuss the four basic computer operations: input, processing, output, and storage

  II. Windows 98 Operations (Software)

Students should know the Microsoft Windows 98 graphical user interface and the Microsoft Office 2000 applications. Students should know how to start Windows 98, the components of the desktop, and the six mouse operations. They should be able to open, close, move, resize, minimize, maximize, and scroll a window. Windows Explorer should be used to select and copy a group of files, display the contents of a folder, create a folder, expand and collapse a folder, and rename and delete a file and a folder. Students should know how to obtain help about using Microsoft Windows 98 and how to shut down Windows 98. Students should know brief explanations of the Microsoft Office 2000 applications and examples of how these applications interact with the Internet, World Wide Web, and intranets.
